"Stromatolites" or the "Oxygen Revolution" inspired by Andrew H. Knoll's book "Life on a Young Planet"

The sky was red and full of carbon dioxide, shallow seas, and then a young life form, Stromatolites, grew in these oceans and begun to breath carbon dioxide, and exhale oxygen....skies became blue.  This small painting is in honor of that revolution.  It is on display now at the Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park.

I don't know what happened to the painting, but here is a second attempt;

I am sharing my painting named "The Venerable Thich Quang Duc" because it is the 50th anniversary of his sacrifice for religious freedom.  A sacrifice being made by Tibetans right now.

Thich Quang Duc  was the monk who set himself on fire in Viet Nam prior to the war to protest persecution of Buddhists by the Catholic Diem government.  As a young man in 1963, I was shocked by his action and my thoughts about him have persisted throughout  my life.  My resulting study of Buddhism  formed the concept of this painting.

Reporter David Halberstam who witnessed the event wrote:  “.... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him. ”

I am reminded of a verse in the “Heart Sutra”: “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.”

Thich Quang Duc lived and died the essence of the “ Heart Sutra,” such peace within turmoil!

The original "Mother & Child" painting.

Here is my painting "Madonna & Child" shown with my wife Liz, my daughter Sevanne, and a beloved friend Magic.  This photo was taken by my good friend Ray Hitchcock at my show at the Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park, San Diego, California in 2010.

The painting is in the style of a Christian Icon.  It was inspired by my wife who is Armenian.  I was and am attracted to her strong warm heart.  So this painting and this picture ( thank you Ray ) are from the Heart.

"Waking up" tries to use colors available in Paleolithic times.  Oxides.  This is a small painting used to experiment with this palette and new patterns. I will use the results of this painting for larger paintings now in progress.

In earlier paintings available for viewing at www.pantarhea.com, I focused on innovating patterns with the "subject matter" being secondary.  In my "Mother & Child" series the intimacy of the "subject matter" is primary, with patterns designed to enhance this mood.

Well, there is hunting? Perhaps puttering around like a Silver Back?  Combat?  Art? Attraction, yes, enchantment, yes, intimacy yes, sex yes, impregnation?  Were men sure of this?  Some say no.  Ah, but there are adoring children?  Back to Art;  My painting "Waking up";

Mother & Child Painting

The daily consciousness of matriarchal society?  Intimate, grounded, protective.  A habit of daily life that includes impregnation, gestation, birth, nursing.  What does a man do?
